5 Key Questions to Write your Business Plan

Oh man, is that the most click-baity title??

Hi, and welcome! If you’re new to me, you can learn a little more about me here.

With the massive cultural shifts that have taken place over the last couple of years, more and more people are considering starting their own businesses. I know that the idea of having more autonomy and more control over both my schedule and my financial future were huge factors in me starting my own business.

But the question becomes - what kind of business can you start and how do you figure that out?

Or maybe you’ve already started your business, but you’re having trouble really identifying your niche.

Don’t let this hurdle stop you. You can create the beginning of your business plan by answering these key questions. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. The point is to find YOUR answers. If you read my series on goal setting and planning, you’ll notice that I say these two sentences a lot. That’s because they’re true. In everything you do, the point is to find the best way that works for YOU and to find what resonates with YOU.

Honestly, that’s half your business plan right there.

Grab a piece of paper or your favorite note-taking method, a cup of coffee, and 20-30 minutes you can focus and let’s dive in.

#1 What are my values?

#2 Why do I want to own my own business?

#3 What do I want to do?

#4 Who do I want to work with?

#4b How do I want to work with them?

#5 What resources are available to help me get started?

Bonus question: Who else is doing the same thing?

Now that you have these answers, you should have a pretty good idea that either you are ready and can take next steps, or that there are a few more skills you’d like to develop before trying to dive in. There are no right or wrong answers and there is no right or wrong outcome! But now you have a starting point.

I’m going to dive into each of those questions in a little more depth over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out!
