The Power of Just Beginning

This is both my introduction to my blog and my call to action to every single person reading this.

If you’re new to me, welcome! I’m Rachel. I focus on working with female-led small businesses; the ones who aren’t ready to hire for full-time support. I add tremendous value by providing access to extensive experience in bite-size pieces their businesses can actually afford. Talk about taking the next step to level up! One of my favorite things I heard from a client who had hired me to do a small project was “you came into my life and opened my eyes to so many things that I could do, without having to do them myself.” When I tell you my heart overflowed! That’s how I hope to make every client feel.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, roadtrips, and powerlifting, but my Shih Tzu named Wicket is the real boss. I’ve had the privilege to work with close friends and be a founding board member of Heavy Breathing Foundation - a nonprofit local to North County San Diego that seeks to give back to communities often taken advantage of by providing structure and creative coaching through strength training and education. My tagline is “driven by iced coffee and mental illness” for a reason and not just my (allegedly) excessive caffeine intake. While I continue to work through my own personal battles with mental health, it is important to me to break the stigma associated with discussing them.

Whew! Ok. And now, back to the point.

If you’re anything like me, you might define your superpower as “overthinking.” Do you try to anticipate every single possible outcome of a conversation or decision? Do you analyze what the response might be if you post this photo vs that one? Do you get really excited to try something new and then somehow manage to talk yourself out of it?

The number of times I have done something similar is frankly innumerable.

Over time, with plenty of unattempted or incomplete ideas under my belt, I started to realize that I was not alone in this. I saw that other people, a LOT of people, also have this issue. But then I also started to pay attention to the people who DID follow through on their ideas.

The common denominator among them all was that they simply started. Most of the time, they didn’t have all of the answers. Most of the time, they knew that their first or second or fifth attempt wasn’t going to be perfect. Most of the time, they tried and got better as they went.

So I’ve tried to shift myself to this method. When I have an idea, I spend some finite amount of time contemplating and planning whether or not it seems feasible. I sketch out the first couple of beginning stages so that I feel clear on what a starting point would be. And then, assuming it’s not cost or time prohibitive, I simply start.

And do you know what?

Now I own a business. I have a planner I’ve designed. I (almost) have an email course I’ve created. I’m a competitive powerlifter. I am learning to create art with Procreate. I would have none of that if I had waited until I had all the answers or was SURE I could not fail.

So today, you’re called to simply begin. I would love to hear what idea or project you have that you’ve been slowly talking yourself out of. What step can you take today towards making it a reality?

If you’re unsure of how to take your goals from conception to reality, I am developing a 5-day email course, Your Life, Planned. I will show you in practical, bite-sized pieces how to use a planning method to reach your goals. It’s free, with no commitment! I hope to join you in your inbox to make your journey just a bit easier! Keep an eye out here or sign up here to be the first to hear when it opens!
